Universal’s Islands of Adventure opened May 28, 1999 and joined Universal Studios Florida to become a theme park destination that is now known as the Universal Orlando Resort.

From experiencing thrilling roller coasters to getting soaked on the water rides Islands of Adventure is the place for the more adventurous theme park fan.

My first visit to Islands of Adventure was in 2005 before The Wizarding World of Harry Potter-Hogsmeade. It has changed a lot in the 20 years since my first visit, adding world-class attractions and entertainment, but visit after visit I find something new to experience.

This guide to Islands of Adventure will tell you everything you need to know about the park. If you want to learn more about how to plan your day read this: 1-Day Islands of Adventure Itinerary

Ambiance of the Park

Islands of Adventure is a really cool park because each lands has its own vibe. Where Universal Studios Florida has an overall theme of stepping into the movies and Epic Universe is being transported through portals into new lands, Islands of Adventure is all about exploring new lands and new adventures.

Seuss Landing is whimsical and colorful, Jurassic Park feels like you are in the Jungle, and The Wizarding World transports guests to Hogwarts during the winter with snow layered roofs. I’ll get into more details of the lands below but the overall feel of the park is an adventure through different lands.

Tickets

One day tickets as well as park-to-park tickets (for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure) are available. Ticket prices start at $119.00 for one day/one park ticket. Be sure to purchase tickets before you arrive to save time and money at the parks.

Then ride Jurassic World VelociCoaster and then the other attractions that are open. Port of Entry

Port of Entry is where guests enter the park to Islands of Adventure. It is lined with shops, including a nice Christmas store, as well as a Starbucks and dining locations. The ambiance and music is very nice here but I have to be honest, I haven’t spent much time here because we are always walking in or out of the park. Maybe someday I can grab a cup of coffee and take a slower pace.

Lost Continent

Lost Continent is having an interesting moment. At one time there used to be two shows in this area but they have both closed. Now it is basically a walk-through to get to Hogsmeade and Jurassic World.

There are shops and dining if you have time to stop but there are not any rides. We have stumbled upon pop-up meet and greets in this area but nothing that is on the app.

A few highlights of the land:

  • The Mystic Fountain: interactive water fountain that sprays you with water and talks to you.
  • Mythos: Fine dining sit down restaurant.
  • 2 Quick Service: Fire Eater’s Grill and Doc Surgrue’s Desert Kebab House

Skull Island Reign Of Kong

Awkwardly situated between Jurassic Park and Toon Lagoon is Skull Island: Reign of Kong. It is a stand alone ride that takes guests on an adventure through the jungle. It is screen based with the finale being an impressive Kong animatronic. If it is your first visit to Universal give it a go but it was one and done for us.

Toon Lagoon

Toon Lagoon is a bit dated but it doesn’t mean it isn’t a fun area to enjoy. There are 2 rides, dining, and a play area. The 2 rides are the water rides at Universal and they will get you soaked!

Things to Do

Be prepared to get soaked if you ride these rides. There are lockers nearby to store belongings. Both rides are well done water attractions.

Marvel Super Hero Island

Marvel Super Hero Island brings comic books to life but it has hit some snags when Disney purchased Marvel. As of today Universal can use the current characters but can’t add more. Only time will tell what the future holds for this land.

For now it has great meet and greets and rides for guests to enjoy.

Tips for Islands of Adventure

Now that you know the layout and what to do at the park, I want to share my best tips for Islands of Adventure. These are things we do to maximize our visit to the park.

  • Arrive 30-45 minutes before park open.
  • Buy your park tickets before you arrive.
  • Ride the most popular attractions in the first 2 hours of park opening.
  • Take advantage of single rider line when it is available.
  • Use Mobile Ordering for dining when available.
  • Stay on-site if you can to take advantage of Early Park Admission.
  • Pack and Prepare for water attractions: Bring ponchos or use a locker.
  • If you bring a backpack be prepared to store it in a locker for VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s, The Incredible Hulk, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.
  • Expect a lot of walking.

That is a quick list but before I want to wrap it up I want to share a bit on lockers. Small lockers are free when required on an attraction, like the ones listed above.

For VelociCoaster and Hulk nothing can be on you or in your pockets. That includes cell phones, fanny packs, wallets, sunglasses, etc. Everything must be put into the locker. Guests will go through a metal detector to make sure items are not forgotten.

lockers at velocicoaster

We have learned over the years to pack very light. A small crossbody bag for wallet, phones, and essentials. If you bring a water bottle be sure to secure it tightly before you put it in the locker. Free cups of water are available at all dining locations.

Guests use their room key or ticket to access the free lockers. For paid lockers guests use a credit card.

My best Islands of Adventure tip is to prioritize 2-3 “must-do” and then be flexible with your day. You will have the most fun enjoying the park and everything it has to offer.
